REED SHELTER
October 2018 was the first anniversary of the fires that devastated a significant part of the Portuguese forest landscape, with the Leiria pine forest being one of the most affected areas.
The “Floresta Viva” event was designed not only to remember that moment, but especially to celebrate the relationship between local communities and the surrounding ecosystem, organizing various activities in order to encourage contact with nature. The chosen place was Lagoa da Ervedeira.
After an important process of selection, harvesting, cleaning and cataloging of the reed, the final structure consists of two main arches, filled with a reed weave and creating a leaf shape, resting lightly on the landscape.
Starting from the idea of rebuilding a connection to an ecosystem, we organized a natural construction workshop, exploring the technical and constructive possibilities of reed (Arundo donax). The exercise invited participants from all ages to build a temporary shelter facing the lagoon.
