UMA CASA COM TODOS

“Uma Casa Com Todos” is a project developed by the School complex of Marrazes in collaboration with Til collective that aims to promote transdisciplinary artistic pedagogy through participatory design.

Challenged by the question “what may be a house that includes all”, we developed the strategy of building small pavilion-like structures in several schools. These structures are built in school patios throughout the school inviting the apropritions of the the school community.

From class to class, we transformed each class room in an arts workshops, challenging students to imagine what the house could be, by drawing its elevation, but also challenging them to make its roofing through a re-working of milk packages into shingles.

We created four participatory exercises that challenged the school community to apropriate the structure, making it their own. The objective was to create a process of sharing and mutual acknowledgement on the basis of the sustainable manipulation of materials and design.

The “house” itself is built along a week and becomes an open construction yard, open to participation by any student and used as a pedagogical instrument. Given the scale and nature of the project, its conception was grounded in a design and construction proposal that allowed easy production, assembling and use.

Once the “house” is built we propose a last exercise: a competition for a sign to install in the “house’s” roof,  open to all and following democratic rules of selection, that challenges the school to create a representation of its new space.

The aim was to make that the “house” , once finished, become a cherished space, open to transformation and able to assume several shapes and dispositions for different uses throughout its existence.
